Zwaantjes Droogte (Karang Koko, Madura Strait, Zwaantjes Reef)

Indonesia

By 1855 some sort of beacon had been put in place on the reef in the Madura Strait some 15 miles north east of Pasuruan. In 1871 an announcement was made that an iron light tower with 4th order light would be erected.

The cast iron lighthouse was supplied by the Netherlands and arrived in kit form along with an engineer to supervise the construction.

It was an octagonal pagoda shape built 2 metres above the sea level on iron supports with three storeys connected by internal iron stairs with a veranda surrounding all 3 floors. At the top was a balcony and lantern that housed the 4th order light supplied by Chance Brothers of Smethwick near Birmingham. The optic had been manufactured in 1868 and was catalogued as being both fixed and revolving in Chance's list of lights and was first lit on 26/10/1871.

The lighthouse keepers spent 2 months on and one month off at the light.

A new lighthouse now stands at this position called Karang Koko however I have been unable to establish when this was built the only reference I was able to find saying that the Zwaantjes Droogte lighthouse was not known if it was still in existence in 1942.
