Vilsandi Lighthouse (Vilsandi Saar, Filsand)

Estonia

There have been two lighthouses on this point, the first was built in 1809 and the second in 1870. The first tower was demolished in 1840. It was in 1870 that Chance Brothers of Smethwick near Birmingham made the first order optic for the new tower. The lighthouse is referenced as Filsand Baltic in the Chance records of 1870.

I have been unable to establish if this is still in use at present however modifications were made in 1957 so this may have resulted in the optic being removed.

The lighthouse keeper from 1906 to 1941 was a gentleman called Artur Toom and he erected nest boxes actoss the island and due to his conservation work the Russian government of Estonia declared the area a bird sanctuary in 1910. His legacy lives on as a designated national park and a popular destination for bird watchers and tourists alike.

The lighthouse became a designated architectural monument on 20/07/2004.
