Yemen
The lighthouse was built in 1866 on a promotory in the Port of Aden in Yemen. It was first lit in 1867 using coconut oil and a fixed lamp. This was updated in 1889 with a new multiple burner mineral oil pressure lamp that increased the brightness and reduced operating costs.
On June 8th 1889 the lighthouse was handed over to the Aden Port Trust.
Chance Brothers of Smethwick near Birmingham were engaged in 1904 for imprivement works on the light. The improvements using incandescent mantles and burners using petroleum vapour inceased the light to 13,500 candle power. The light was also converted from fixed to occulting, appearing for 3 seconds then going dark for two seconds. This was achieved by suspending a cylinder over the lamp which was raised and lowered by a simple clockwork mechanism.
This work was overseen by Fred Tickle who travelled from England for the month long task. On the night of 27th February the light was lit, however shortly after he had returned to England the light failed and a government enquiry followed.
It was put back into operation and a later date a catadioptric mirror was fitted behind the lamp increasing the candle power to 61,000. In 1962 the lamp was converted to electricity when it became 308,000 candle power.
I have been unable to find any information regarding removal of the Chance Brothers optic so I presume it is still in situ.
