Eclipse Island Lighthouse

Australia

Eclipse Island was lit in 1926 which coincided with the automation of Breaksea Island.
Landing personnel and materials at the site was always hazardous. Following a fatal accident in 1971 the decision was taken to automate the lighthouse. It was converted to acetylene in 1976 and the keepers were withdrawn. The lantern was demolished and the lens and pedestal were donated to the Western Australian Museum (Museum of the Great Southern, in Albany). The lens and pedestal are on permanent display at Albany; the lens makes an impressive display as it rotates. The light was converted to solar power in 1984. In 2006 a Vega VRB-25 beacon was installed; in 2022 it is still a significant aid to navigation.
