Cape Moreton Lighthouse

Australia

The Cape Moreton lighthouse which commenced operation in 1857 was the first lighthouse in Queensland built at Cape Moreton Island as the New South Wales light . It was buit two years before Queensland became a separate colony in 1959. It served as an unlit daymark to assist shipping through the great barrier reef to the south-east of Torres Strait.
The structure of the stone lighthouse was locally obtained sandstone and was constructed by stonemasons working with convict labourers. It was built due to the increasing traffic and large number of shipwrecks scattered around the entrance to Moreton Bay and for many years and was the only light on this vast coastline.
