It was designed and built by the Office of the Chief Civil Engineer and constructed by the System Harbour Engineer, Durban. The lens was manufactured by Stone-Chance, one of its first after Chance Brothers, then owned by Pilkingtons, sold the lighthouse business to Stone Platt of Crawley, England. The original light source was a 1,500 watt incandescent lamp, since replaced with a 400 metal halide lamp.
