Foul Point Lighthouse (Sampur Lighthouse)

Sri Lanka

The lighthouse was built by the British in 1863 the optic already having been made by Chance Brothers of Smethwick near Birmingham as early as 1860.
The lighthouse has 5 levels with a steel stairway.
During the 30 year war that raged with the Tamil Tiger Terrorists in Sri Lanka the lighthouse was effectively cut off so was not used or maintained. When the war ended in 2009 life slowly returned to normal however the lighthouse was now in a poor state of repair and riddled with bullet holes.
It was restored between 2018 and 2019 and eventually restarted as a navigation light in March 2020.
