Portpatrick Old Lighthouse

United Kingdom

This is approximatley the 4th structure on this site, the previous lighthouse having been shipped to Sri Lanka in 1869 (Historic Scotland). The first lighthouse was from before 1792, possibly 1779, and was replaced in 1836 by a temporary light which was used until at least 1839. There was no lighthouse between around 1840 to 1856, partly due to the south pier needing some reconstruction.
The current lighthouse was part of general improvements to the harbour in 1870, when the Board of Trade took over.
It was decomissioned in 1900, being replaced by Killantringan Lighthouse a few miles further north. It was in private ownership by 1908, (although rented by the local council until 1920).
It was Cat B listed in 1979, along with most of Portpatrick harbour.
