Nelson (Boulder Bank)

New Zealand

The lighthouse was activated in 1862. It was prefabricated in England by Stothart and Pitt of Bath and fitted with a fourth order lens from Chance Brothers of Smethwick near Birmingham. The whole construction would have been shipped out and then erected on site.
The lighthouse was deactivated in 1982 as it could no longer be seen agsinst the backdrop of the lights of Nelson itself. At deactivation it was New Zealands oldest active lighthouse. Lily Robertson wrote a memoir of her life as a child at the lighthouse in the 1880s.
Though the lighthouse is very easily visible from the Nelson waterfront it is a 30km round trip to access the lighthouse on foot so much easier to access via water by boat or kayak.
The lighthouse has a Historic Place Category 1 listing by Heritage New Zealand put in place on 23rd June 1983.
