East Point Lighthouse

Canada

East Point Lighthouse has the distinction of being “Canada’s Confederation Lighthouse” as it was built in 1867 and is the only Lighthouse that is still operating today.

We welcome you to visit our lighthouse and enjoy a guided tour to learn more about the history of this 67-foot structure along with our 5 lighthouse keepers who manned the light from 1867-1989. While here, you can enjoy the beautiful ocean view where the mighty tides of the St. Lawrence and Northumberland Strait meet, enjoy a picnic on our grounds, browse through crafts and gifts at East Point Craft Shop, which is just next door. And for nature lovers, you’ll want to take time to enjoy our bird watch tower, which has a terrific vantage point to spot rare and common birds, as East Point is known as a hot spot for migrating pelagic birds.

Excerpt: One of the island's most popular tourist attractions. The lighthouse was relocated closer to the water in 1885 and then returned to its original site in 1908 when threatened by erosion. Erosion is a continuing problem and in the spring of 2008 the fog signal/visitor center building was relocated next to the tower to escape the waves. In 2009 DFO transferred ownership of the station to Friends of Elmira, a local preservation group. In August 2010 the group and the provincial government also completed at $250,000 program of improvements to the site, including enlarged visitor facilities. In 2016 the friends group received $54,375 in grants, mostly from the federal and provincial governments, for exterior and interior restoration of the light tower. Located at the easternmost point of the island off PE 16 northeast of Souris. Accessible by paved road; parking provided. Site open; tower open from June through September.
