Danger Point

South Africa

For many years local people had been calling for a lighthouse to be built at this location, especially after the HMS Birkenhead struck a reef and sank a few hundred metres off shore in 1852 with the loss of 455 lives. This disaster is the origin of saving the lives "women and children first" . After many years of campaigning the government of the Cape gave the go-ahead and Chance Brothers was contracted to manufacture the lens, which was installed in 1895.
