Bull Point Lighthouse

United Kingdom. England

'''Old Lighthouse'''
In 1876 surveyors decided on bull point as being the ideal location for a lighthouse in the area. However, many thought nearby Morte Point would have been a better position due to the danger posed by Morte stone. Mr George Knott was the first lighthouse keepers being the 4th generation in his family to become a lighthouse keeper and have the record for longest period of continued service in manning lighthouses. Opened on 10th June 1879 at a cost of £7,000. The light, lens and lantern were manufactured by Chance brothers. The lighthouse was then electrified in 1960 with the removal of the old Chance lens.

'''New Lighthouse'''
On 24h September 1972 15m of cliff face collapsed into the sea and a further 15m subsided causing cracks to appear in the lighthouse walls. The fog signal station partially collapsed, and the lighthouse was put out of action. A new lighthouse was built further inland with parts of the old lighthouse reused in the new construction which was completed in 1974. The original Chance lantern is presumed to have been reused in the new lighthouse.
