Barns Ness Lighthouse

United Kingdom. Scotland

The lighthouse was constructed by the engineers and brothers David Stevenson and Charles Stevenson who were responsible for many Scottish lighthouses. The lintel above the door states the year 1901. Local stone was used from quarries at Craigree and Barnton.
The lighthouse was fitted with a first order revolving optic supplied by Chance Brothers of Smethwick near Birmingham.
The lighthouse was machine gunned in the Second World War but sustained no damage.
It was electrified in 1966 and was completely automated in 1986.
In 2005 it was decided that Barns Ness was no longer required, it was deactivated in 2005 and put up for sale in 2006.
The lighthouse keepers accomodation is now a holiday rental property.
Both the lighthouse and accommodation are grade B listed.
