Auskerry Orkney Islands Lighthouse

United Kingdom

The lighthouse was built between 1864 and 1866 by the pioneering lighthouse engineers David and Thomas Stevenson to light the northern entrance to the Stronsay Firth. The lighthouse has two keepers flats attached and two keepers were allocated to look after the light. South of the lighthouse near the shoreline is a crater from one of two bombs that were dropped on the lighthouse in WWII in 1941, the second never being found. As a result of this attack the lighthouse was supplied with two anti aircraft guns to be manned by the keepers.
In 1961 the light was automated, the first in Orkney to be automated and also one of the first in Scotland. It is now monitored by the NLB from Edinburgh.
I am unable to find further information as to whether the original Chance optic is still in situ or has since been removed.
