The Lighthouse was built in 1819 on a foundation laid in 1787. The architect was Daniel Alexander and the builder Joseph Nelson for Trinity House. It is grade II* Listed Scheduled Monument.
The lighthouse is a 97ft (30m) granite tower with a 147 step spiral stair leading to the lantern. There is a large moulded cornice at top with balustrade of railings with moulded cast iron standards and large cast iron glazed lantern with conical roof with ball finial and weathervane. Light no longer present. It has a keeper's house attached on the north east by a covered passage.
Old Light Lundy was the highest lighthouse above sea level in Great Britain standing at 469 ft (143 m) above sea level. This caused a problem from the outset as the light was often not visible due to fog. In 1829, to deal with this problem, a lantern room was added to the base of the tower. This had a fixed light while the upper light was flashing. Initially both lights had Argand lamps fitted with parabolic reflectors.
In 1842 a new rotating optic by Cookson & Co, Newcastle was installed, containing dioptric lenses with mirrors. This arrangement was replaced in 1857 by a large (first-order) 8-sided revolving catadioptric optic manufactured by Chance Brothers giving the light a range of over 30 nautical miles .
The lighthouse continued to operate until 1897 when, due to the ongoing problem of visability, two further lighthouses, to the north and south of the island were constructed and the Old Light was abandoned. Items from the old light were transferred to Lundy South Lighthouse including the 1857 optic.
